Here at Alchemy on Ice, we love a perfectly frosty, refreshing slush — the kind you mix, freeze, and serve when you want something fun, flavourful, and a little bit magical.
But our fruit-forward slush mixes have a secret second life.

While they were created to become luxurious frozen slushies, they can also be used in other creative ways. Today, we’re taking our mix out of the freezer and stepping into the bubbly little world of natural fermentation.
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own fizzy fruit soda at home, this recipe is a fantastic place to start. With the help of an active ginger bug, you can transform one pouch of Alchemy on Ice slush mix into a naturally carbonated, fruit-filled homemade soda.
Think of it as a little kitchen alchemy: fruit, sugar, water, ginger, time… and suddenly, bubbles.
What Is a Ginger Bug?
A ginger bug is a natural fermentation starter made from three simple ingredients: fresh ginger, sugar, and water.

When those ingredients sit together and are “fed” over a few days, they begin to cultivate wild yeasts and beneficial bacteria from the ginger and surrounding environment. Once active, the ginger bug can be used to naturally carbonate sweetened drinks.
Adding strained ginger bug liquid to a fruit base allows the wild yeasts to feed on the sugars and produce carbon dioxide. That carbon dioxide is what gives homemade soda its lovely fizz.
It is simple, old-fashioned, and surprisingly satisfying.
Why Use Alchemy on Ice Mixes?
Our mixes are made with real freeze-dried fruit powders and natural sugars, which makes them a fantastic base for experimenting with homemade soda.
Instead of starting from scratch, our products have already done a lot of the work for you. The fruit flavour is concentrated, the sweetness is built in, and the acidity gives the finished soda a bright, refreshing edge.
It is still a bit of an experiment — fermentation always has a mind of its own — but that is part of the fun.
Each flavour will ferment a little differently, and each batch may have its own personality. Some may turn out bright and tangy, some softer and fruitier, and some extra bubbly if your ginger bug is especially lively.
What You’ll Need
Ingredients
1 pouch of your favourite Alchemy on Ice slush mix
8 cups filtered water, room temperature
½ cup active ginger bug liquid, strained
Filtered or unchlorinated water is highly recommended. Chlorine can slow down or kill the wild yeast and bacteria in your ginger bug, which may affect carbonation.
Equipment
A large mixing pitcher
Two 4-cup plastic bottles with lid
A funnel
A fine mesh strainer for the ginger bug
A spoon for stirring
For bottles, choose those designed for fermentation or carbonation. Pressure builds during fermentation, so using the right bottles matters.
Step-by-Step Brewing Instructions
1. Mix Your Fruit Base
In a large pitcher or bowl, combine the full pouch of Alchemy on Ice slush mix with 8 cups of filtered, room-temperature water.
Stir well until the dry mix is fully dissolved. You want the base to be smooth and evenly mixed before adding your ginger bug.
This is your fruit soda foundation — sweet, tangy, and ready for a little fermentation magic.
2. Add the Ginger Bug
Once your fruit base is fully mixed, pour in ½ cup of strained active ginger bug liquid.
Stir gently to distribute the wild yeast cultures throughout the mixture. You do not need to whisk aggressively here. A gentle stir is enough to invite the ginger bug into its new potion.
Your mixture is now officially alive and ready to carbonate.
3. Bottle It Up
Using a funnel, carefully pour the liquid into your bottles, splitting the batch evenly.
Each bottle, depending on the size you picked, should hold about 4 cups total, but do not fill them right to the top. Leave about 1 to 2 inches of headspace in each bottle. This empty space gives the carbon dioxide room to build as the soda ferments.
This part is important. Too little headspace can create too much pressure inside the bottle.
4. Let It Ferment
Seal the bottles tightly and place them on your kitchen counter at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
Let them ferment for 2 to 4 days.
The exact timing will depend on a few things:
How warm your kitchen is
How active your ginger bug is
How much natural sugar is available
The flavour of mix you are using
A warmer kitchen usually means faster fermentation. A cooler kitchen may take a little longer.
5. Burp the Bottles Daily
Once a day, carefully open each bottle to release built-up pressure. This is often called “burping.”
Open slowly and point the bottle away from your face, just in case the carbonation is stronger than expected.
You may hear a soft hiss at first. As the soda becomes more carbonated, the hiss may turn into a stronger pop, and when you see bubbles rushing to the surface, it is a sign that the ginger bug is working.
When the soda is fizzy enough for your liking, it is time to chill it.
6. Chill and Enjoy
Once you are happy with the carbonation, transfer the bottles to the refrigerator.
The cold temperature slows fermentation and helps lock in that refreshing fizz. Once chilled, pour over ice and enjoy your homemade fruit soda.
You can sip it as-is, garnish it with citrus, or serve it in a pretty glass for a naturally bubbly treat.
It is bright, refreshing, and just a little bit enchanting.
A Few Helpful Brewing Notes
Homemade fermented soda can vary from batch to batch. That is totally normal.
If your soda is not very fizzy after two days, give it another day and make sure your ginger bug is active and bubbly before using it next time.
If your soda gets fizzy quickly, move it to the fridge sooner.
If the flavour tastes a little too strong, pour it over lots of ice or dilute slightly with sparkling water after chilling.
And most importantly: always use proper fermentation-safe bottles and burp them daily. Natural carbonation is wonderful, but pressure can build quickly.
Which Flavours Work Best?
This method can be used with any Alchemy on Ice pouch, but fruit-forward flavours are especially fun for soda.
Try:
Strawberry Charm for a bright strawberry lemonade-style soda
Mango Philter #9 for a tropical, tangy fizz
Poison Apple for a crisp apple soda with a mischievous twist
Spellbound Citrus for something zesty and refreshing
Peach Arcana for a soft, summery peach soda
Each one brings its own little spell to the bottle.
